Pool Hot Tub Safety

By Jake Plumer

No matter how much you enjoy your pool or spa safety has to remain the top priority and as the old saying goes their no better defense against pool accidents than a good offense. We will go over some of the best ways to ensure your pool or spa is safe. The best way to start is to think of your pool or hot tub area with circles of defense. The most important area of defense is in supervision we can not watch or kids like we do in the house otherwise known as passive supervision we go about our daily chores while the kids play in their room or watch TV this type of supervision is not acceptable in the pool area we must maintain direct constant supervision and riley on alarms or bells to watch or pool or hot tub areas.

You must remember that you need to protect not only your kids but maybe a new puppy or the neighbor kids from entering your pool area. In the circle of defense you should start with a god quality fence that has an automatically locking gate, the next circle of defense is a pool alarm this will sound off if the pool is disturbed, follow this up with a security pool cover these three circles should ensure that no children or animals enter your pool with out adult supervision.

Your first pool party what are the dos and don’ts. You would think that in a party atmosphere with many people around to help watch the kids that the would be safe the problem is everyone thinks everyone else is watching the kids so in fact no one is watching the kids except in a passive manner. The remedy for this hire a life guard for the party or assign a qualified adult you may check with your local YMCA or youth camps you may be able to hire one of theirs. Another big rule no alcohol consumption when using the pool. The use of floaties small inflated arm bands or floating rings should not be allowed if a child can not stand up or is unable to swim at an acceptable level they should be in a coast guard approved life jacket.

Another area of pool safety is in the general operation of the pool you should have your pool inspected periodically to ensure that the pool drains and covers are in good shape and of the type that will not allow hair or body parts to become entangled. The electrical portion of the pool should be inspected to make sure that GFCI circuits re working properly also check and maintain the proper levels of chemicals to keep harmful bacteria out of the water.
